The cool, lush rainforest gullies around Marysville have long been among my favourite places for a bushwalk. Trails crisscross tree fern-lined rivers and creeks, where crystal clear water tumbles over moss-covered boulders. It’s basically my idea of paradise, and it’s only an hour and a half from Melbourne.

I was lucky enough to discover Marysville in 2008, before the Black Saturday bushfires swept through and devastated the area. It’s only been in the last couple of years that the majority of the walking trails have been reopened for public use. The way the bush recovers after fires is incredible. Things will never look the same as they once did, but there’s something even more beautiful about the new life.
This new app released by Marysville Tourism is aimed at tourists and day-trippers, and provides an intimate, detailed guide to the wonders of the Marysville area. All of my favourite walks in the area are covered. They’re quite short – the longest of them being only 4 hours – but this just means choosing three or four to fill a day. It also makes Marysville the perfect place for hiking with kids, or those friends and loved ones who don’t quite share your level of hiking enthusiasm.
There are 14 walks featured, accompanied by useable maps (they’re not topographic, but just as good as anything you’d get from Parks Victoria), solid directions, safety information, and a good range of photos so you’ll know what to expect from each trail. Several of them even come with audio tours telling the story of Marysville’s logging history, and familiarising visitors with the area’s wildlife.
While the focus of the app is on bushwalking, it pretty much covers the ins and outs of planning a weekend away. It even provides suggested one and two-day itineraries for each season, to help you make the best of the areas nature, history, food, and wine. If you don’t like their suggestions, it provides the facility to come up with your own itinerary.
Okay, so it won’t book your accommodation for you, but there are other apps for that. If you want to look for events coinciding with your visit, check the weather, or find food, petrol, ATM’s, or picnic grounds, it’s got you covered.
The Visit Marysville app is free to download for either Apple or Android devices. Make sure you download before you get to Marysville, since reception out there is likely to be patchy. Marysville Tourism has cleverly designed an app that works without any internet access for this reason.

If you happen to be one of those rare people who’ve managed to keep your life smartphone and tablet free, iPods with the app preloaded (and free headphones) are available to hire at Marysville’s Visitor Information Centre.
When spending the day or a weekend in a tucked away place like Marysville, it can be easy to miss the best bits simply because you don’t know what the best bits are. This app makes it easy to bring a wealth of information with you when you visit, and ensures you get the best value from the time you have there.
