Spatial Vision provided me with an Outdoor Recreation Guide for review, and are also supporting a giveaway for readers (read this post for information). This has no influence on my opinions and my review is completely unbiased.
When I was first starting out with this whole hiking obsession of mine, I remember asking a friend how to go about finding the best topographic maps for hiking in Victoria. He told me that, so long as they have one for the area I need, Spatial Vision are always a safe bet. I’ve heeded his advice ever since.
Having said that, you might be wondering if I’ve actually sat down and compared two different brand’s maps of the same area. The answer would be no. Who the hell has time to do that?

So obviously I can’t tell you how much better Spatial Vision’s Wilsons Promontory Outdoor Recreation Guide is than any other brand’s map of the area... What I can tell you is that Spatial Vision’s maps have never led me astray.
There is one thing I particularly like about Spatial Vision’s maps though, and that’s the distance markers they have on sections of walking track. There’s no need to awkwardly measure out distances, or keep referring back to a chart. This makes the calculations much easier, especially in the case that you’re on the trail when you decide to make changes to your plan.
The other cool thing about the Outdoor Recreation Guides is that they come with walk suggestions. This one has given me a couple of ideas for day-hikes that I wasn’t aware of. In total, it features 11 suggested day-hikes, 4 multi-day hikes, and a handful of short beach strolls. These are also accompanied by helpful information on safety, minimal-impact walking, and the area’s history, flora, and fauna.
For the first time, they’ve even released a Wilsons Promontory Outdoor Recreation Guide iPhone application to accompany the release of this map. Alas I couldn’t try it out because, believe it or not, I don’t actually have a single iProduct (seriously, not a single one).
The Wilsons Promontory Outdoor Recreation Guide can be purchased through Spatial Vision's website for $12.95 (plus postage). I highly recommend getting it laminated before you use it, as it will last much longer. Some map shops will do this for you, so you may prefer to buy it there.
