Whether you’re an adventurous Melbournian or an adventurous visitor, there’s a veritable bucketload of experiences on offer that can help scratch that itch we both know you have. Exploring new places and trying new experiences is what makes me feel alive, but the problem is that a lot of these things cost money. That’s why I like to keep an eye on sites like Scoopon to see what’s on offer. Here’s a sample of the latest Melbourne experiences that tickle my fancy.
Snorkelling with seals in Port Phillip Bay
Don a wetsuit and snorkel, and visit parts of Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay that few locals even know exist. You’ll spend a couple of hours snorkelling reefs with the potential to see stingrays, weedy seadragons, and all manner of other sea creatures, and swim with the Australian fur seals at Chinaman’s Hat. Prices range from $79 for one person on a weekday through to $190 for two people on the weekend, so bring a friend and go on a weekday for the biggest (37%) discount.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding or Kiteboarding in St Kilda
Hire a stand-up paddleboard at Melbourne’s famous St Kilda Beach for either one or two hours (at $15 or $25, respectively). Paddleboarding will give you a fun workout and let you explore and people watch your way along this iconic stretch of beach.
Not extreme enough for you? $65 will get you a two-hour kiteboarding lesson which, in all honesty, sounds absolutely terrifying to me. If you’re braver than me, you might even be keen on five hours of tuition over two days for $179.
Apart from scoring yourself one hell of a good time, you’ll be getting anywhere between 40% and 66% off the standard rates.
Indoor bouldering in Port Melbourne
If you’ve never been indoor bouldering, it’s just like indoor rock climbing but the walls are shorter, so coupled with some strategic falling and big thick mats underneath you won’t need ropes or a harness (even better, you don’t need someone to belay).
Right now you can score a full day of indoor bouldering in Port Melbourne at nearly half price ($14 per person). Shoe hire and chalk is included, so you’ll just need to bring your physical and mental A-game.
Slide and ride Funfields Themepark in Whittlesea
You can’t call yourself adventurous and then say you don’t like waterslides, right? If there’s any kid left in you, you’ll love Funfields Themepark. It’s a bit out of town so you might need to hire a car if you’re visiting Melbourne, but there’s nothing quite like it anywhere else around Melbourne. Between the rides and thrilling waterslides, you’re sure to get your money’s worth, especially when they’re offering tickets for $34 (that’s nearly as low as the pensioner rate).
An hour or two of bouncing around
Okay, so maybe this is more for the adventurous kidlets but I’ve been known to join in the fun when I’ve visited with my kids. You’re only as old as you feel, I reckon. Airodrome Trampoline and Inflatable Park in Altona currently has tickets starting from as low as $12 per person (a 38% discount), which gives you an hour of bouncing around their interconnected trampolines, foam pit laneways, and inflatable playground. Hop to it.
