As busy as the trails of Wilsons Promontory National Park get, there’s no doubt it’s one of Australia’s most beautiful national parks. If you’ve taken the drive to Tidal River yourself you’ll agree, even without setting foot on a hiking trail.
The best way to experience The Prom is definitely the hiking trails, though. There are so many options that it can be daunting to even choose one. If you’re staying at Tidal River and arrive with only a couple of hours of daylight to spare, Pillar Point makes for a great introduction to Wilsons Prom’s incredible coastline.
It’s relatively easy. Just find your way to the Tidal River Footbridge at the north side of the campground, cross over and follow the trail signed “Pillar Point”. There’s only one more track junction where you’ll need to veer left, but it’s also clearly signed. The views will keep you saying “wow” all the way but Pillar Point is something else. Make sure you take the time to relax and really take it in.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is absolutely teeming with wildlife but on trails like this one – being close to Tidal River and seeing plenty of traffic – you’re less likely to see much. The birds don’t care about crowds though, so don’t forget to look skyward.
The most common feedback I get from readers of The Bushwalking Blog is that they “just want more hikes to do”. I get it – hiking is my passion too. I do more hikes than I’d ever have the time to write about, so that’s why I’ve decided Bare Bones Bushwalking is now a thing. Not every hike has a story I can attach to it and some I just don’t get around to writing up, so in an effort to share ALL of (or at least more of) the hikes with you I’m doing this. A more simplified blog post that gives you everything you need to go and do the hike yourself. Make your own stories.
