Jutting from the landscape less than a kilometre from the massive Arapiles mountain range, Mitre Rock is like a tiny baby brother.
It’s a sight to behold, though, and well worth spending an hour or so checking out up close. There isn’t much in the way of walking tracks but it’s easy to rock-hop your way around the base of the rock, choosing your path as you go. There were a few groups of climbers on the day of our visit and we enjoyed sticking pretty close to the rock so we could watch them climb.
Starting from the carpark, we made our way clockwise around Mitre Rock and then decided to go up the rock as far as we could and check out the views before returning to the carpark roughly the same way.
As with Mount Arapiles, it was probably to busy for wildlife spotting but if you’re visiting in the warmer months you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for snakes.

Path Taken: Mitre Rock carpark – off track around base of Mitre Rock – up the rock and back – Mitre Rock carpark.
Car Access: Follow the Western Highway for around 300 km from Melbourne to Horsham, then take Edenope Road / Wimmera Highway for another 25 km to Natimuk. Drive straight through Natimuk and follow the road for another 8 km, turning right into Centenary Park Road. After 1 km you’ll find the entrance to the campground. Continue on for 3.4 km, turning left at the only intersection and you’ll find a carpark on your right.
Map: None necessary. This is a very short mostly off-track walk that circles a major geographical formation.
